A Note About Carpools and Field Trips
In the past we have included car pool ground transportation as part of the retreat package. This year we have taken that cost out.
It has always been unusual for Kalani to have a retreat that felt it necessary to include or organize a car pool.
The facility has the best food for miles around and great amenities. The ocean is right there and it’s a wonderful place to chill out and retreat.
They have group activities should anyone get bored, so why leave it?
Well, because the island of Hawaii has so many amazing things to see and explore!
This is true, and a big part of why we have had the car pools in the past. We have enjoyed the freedom of being able to get out and do field trips as a group activity. This meant renting cars for the entire retreat, and many days they have sat unused. The time has come where we each have to start thinking differently about transportation in regards to it’s cost financially and environmentally. Global warming is real. There are pros and cons to each side of the issue. This year we have decided to put our thoughts into action and experiment by not including car pool ground transportation. We felt the cars gave us freedom to explore and at the same time were creating less impact on the environment than if we all rented our own cars. True enough, however we found we didn’t use the cars everyday, thus creating extra demand with rental car agencies. There could cost effectively only be 1 official driver, so we had volunteer drivers. With limited drivers, the car pools were not ultimate freedom. So now we are seeing that the cars do not absolutely need to be there. Our thinking now in regards to environmental impact has changed. If we resist renting a bunch of cars and instead rely on and utilize Kalani’s cooperative shuttles and adventure packages (ala carte, that include transportation) we will travel less over all. We can reduce our environmental impact even further by using transportation only when necessary and you may even save by having more individual choices, instead of the included cost of vans. Our choice this year is to support the transportation systems already in place for the Puna coast and not create more vehicle demand on the island. We are happy to say we have enjoyed 17 years of perfect driving records, but for the workshop host it is always been a personal responsibility, worry, and concern for everyone’s safety (as you can well imagine). Kalani is a large non profit organization with insurance liability all worked out. We feel this is a win win situation.
Suggestions
There are more opportunities in the General Belly Dance Course to go explore (without missing a class) than in the Instructors Intensive Training.
I suggest if you have your heart set on going to the volcano (cool thing to see) that you add on a day to your stay and sign up with Kalani
to go on their adventure tour afterwards. Seeing the volcano park is really a long day trip, as it is spectacular after the sun goes down as well.
The afternoon we are all free is another option, but it would be a short trip to make it back to class,
or if you stay past dusk you would just know you are going to just skip class.
The more people who go, the cheaper it gets, but there is a limited amount of seats in their vans.
We do not know how many dancers will be at retreat yet.
Take a look at this page:

Cost Example of Kalani’s prices:
If 6 people want to go to the steam vents and the hot pools, it would be 3 hours and $40 each.
If only 2 people went, it would be $65 each.
If 3 people wanted a full day at the volcano or the beach on the other side of the island (all day trip), it would be $90 each
or $75 each for 6 people.
They have nice big vans and can take more. If you want to do an adventure, email Delilah and Pine and we can set things up in advance and get a group rate. Don’t call Kalani.

Our favorite tour book is "Big Island Revealed"
